The Alvin Lustig Archive originally launched in 2006, a result of our admiration for this important modern design pioneer and our burgeoning interest in graphic design history. Since then, Steven Heller and Elaine Lustig Cohen have written an indispensable monograph, Born Modern: The Life and Design of Alvin Lustig (Chronicle Books, 2010).
In addition to Lustig’s rich body of work in book jackets, graphic design and architecture & interiors, the website includes several articles that give insight and context into his short career. Lustig’s own voice is among this group in the form of his writing on subjects such as teaching, working, and his personal notes on design. A page devoted to his photos & letters reveal professional relationships while sharing hints of Lustig’s personality and aspects of being a modern designer in the mid-20th century.
Even with all of this information, there is the potential for more research. So, we’ve included a list of existing Lustig archives at institutions and a selected bibliography.
Both the original and updated (2026) versions of this website would not have been possible without the generosity, guidance, and vision of Elaine Lustig Cohen (1927–2016), who shared her personal archives with us and allowed this project to become a reality. For her mentorship, support, and kindness, we are eternally grateful and dedicate this website to her memory.
We are also indebted to Steven Heller for his expertise on Alvin Lustig and design history. Steve’s knowledge, insight, and writings were instrumental in the creation and continued success of this project.
